Necrotic Realms is a tactical strategy game with deckbuilding. The core game loop revolves around a grid-based tactical combat system, where players take turns summoning minions, casting spells, and strategically positioning their forces to outmanoeuvre and defeat their opponents.
Players choose a necromancer character, each with their own minions, spells, artefacts, and specialisations, and must construct a deck prior to playing. Cards are played directly from the hand to the grid-based 9x5 board. The core experience revolves around tactical decision-making, as players seek to flank opponents, unleash combos, and exploit the unique abilities of their Necromancer and minions. Thematically, players have to deal damage to themselves in order to take actions.
I was inspired mechanically by tactical role-playing video games such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, the Fire Emblem series, the Baldur’s Gate series, and especially Duelyst; trading card games like Hearthstone; as well as board games such as Gloomhaven and Demeo (a virtual board game but a board game nonetheless).
